P.J Day

On Friday the 10th of September, the school is having a pajama day. We come to school in our p.jays and bring a donation for the Salvation Army. All the money raised will be given to the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army started in New Zealand in 1883. They help homeless people find a safe place to live, they can help in emergencies like earthquakes, they help people who are poor, they help with missing people, they provide food parcels for people who need it, they help you find hope...

Library Visit

Today we went to the Mapua Library for our first class visit this term. We will be going every alternate Friday, starting today, from 10.30am-11.30am.


Friday September 10th
Friday September 24th

Your child has been issued 2 books and needs to bring these back to school on Friday September 10th, when we will be revisiting the library. The date on the books allows 3 weeks, however we will be visiting fortnightly, so try to have them read in that time.

The school has paid for individual cards, so the books are under your child's name if you want to return them earlier.

If you have lost a book or accidentally damaged one, please let the librarians know, so they can work through that with you.


The Mapua Library is a great resource and we really enjoyed our time there. If you want to join us, you are more than welcome.

Sports

This term we are doing winter sport. We are doing basketball, netball and rippa rugby.
In rugby we are lerning to pass and to hold the ball properly. In basketball we are
learning to bounce pass, chest pass and to bounce the ball under your waist.
In netball we lernt to pass and catch.

Building a Bird House.

How to make a Bird House. well First you need some string and 4 straws ,2 big peaces of paper, ,15 or 20 peaces of Newspaper and 1peace of plastik.Then you can start making it but It needs to be 60cm or 50cm high so its not as easy for cats or rats to get them. Then it should turn out like a toy Bird House. By James and Rebecca.



How to build a bird house. Well, first you need some string, four straws, two big pieces of paper, 15-20 pieces of newspaper and one piece of plastic. Now you can start making it.

Remember, it needs to be 50cm-60cm high so it's not easy for cats or rats to get them. It should then, turn out like a bird house.

Building the longest bridge.

We had a challenge to see how long each marble went. We had to make a bridge that's stable between 2 desks. The Amazing Inventors' bridge went 43 cm.The girls rock got 21cm.

Technology Challenge




On Wednesday we did a Technology Challenge.Rooms six,one and four got split up into three groups.group one did a catapult challenge the beans they fired went pretty long there was awesome designs.group two did some marble bridges some were very long and very cool.And group three made some bird houses they looked very comfy they were very imaginative.I thought the challenges were really awesome.

On Wednesday, we completed a technology challenge. The Middle Syndicate were split up into groups. Group one built a bird feeder, group two had to build a catapult to throw a bean the furtherest and group three had to build the longest bridge. The catapults fired the beans a long way. Technology Catapults

On Wednesday the 25 of August the Middle Syndicate had a Technology Challenge. We were split into groups; one group had to make the longest marble bridge, one group had to build a stand alone bird feeder and another group had to build a catapult that threw a bean the furtherest. We're telling you about the catapult.

We had 10 minutes to make a catapult that fires a bean. After all that we had a competition to see who's bean would go the furthest when you fired it.The longest bean went 7m and 49cm. Second place was 3m and 69cm. I felt happy for coming second.

Sometimes the ideas don't quite work, so we have to think about how to make them work better. But when they do work, it is really cool...


Fairytale Word Wall



This term we are learning to write our own fairytale. We made a word wall to help us use interesting words for our stories. Whaea Aroha got us into groups of four and five to make different parts of a fairytale; Once upon a time, a goodie victim(Princess), a goodie hero (prince), a baddie,things to stop goddie getting what they want, and....happily ever after. Then we had to think of interesting adjectives and verbs to describe those characters and settings. We placed them on the wall and now we have our own fairytale dictionary to use.

Parent Catch Up

Kia Ora Koutou.

Well, we've had a very busy start to the term and now we're half way through! Time does seem to fly when you're having fun.

Maths: Fraction focus. We are learning about fractions in context to real life situations. There is lots of problem solving using fraction strategies and knowledge. Try to encourage any discussions about fractions at home.

Writing: Fairytales. We have read and dissected well known fairytales in reading to help develop our knowledge and confidence in writing our very own fairytale.

Reading: We continue to work on using lots of different strategies for reading. The focus at the moment is "Skippy Frog" for most children. Skip it, skip it!
1: Skip the word (Skip it, skip it)
2: Read to the end of the sentence.
3. "Hop back" and read it, read it.

This is to encourage the children to use the sentence to put the word in context, to help look at the whole picture rather than just the word, which can limit comprehension. Try this at home.

Topic: We have finished our focus on "Keeping Ourselves Safe" I believe there have been some real life lessons learnt through this unit, where the children are armed with knowledge and tools to deal with unwanted touch. A task sheet was sent home earlier in the term to help you and your child discuss this.

Topic: Techonology. We will continue to have our Smarties programme on a Thursday afternoon with a Technology focus. This will support the learning we do throughout the week.

Sport and Health: Winter Sports: Basketball, Rugby, Netball. Soon we will be starting our atheltics programme to prepare for the Moutere Hills Athletics Day.

Mind Bending Friday


Each Friday we are challenged to complete some Mind Bending tasks. These include; designing a t-shirt for the envronment, creating music using science to explore pitch, create a puppet to practice sewing, origami to think about angles in maths and how to follow instructions, code breaking to solve the secret message and then to create our own code, blogging to communicate our learning with you!

I was making a boat. I put the wood in the wood curving machine. It curved good. Then ten minutes later it was made. I went for a test. The engine bursted into life. I put the gears up like this... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10! I was at my 10th gear. I was taking a risk. I went up the gears again from 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19... I know I was at the top gear. I was really excited.

Touch we like!

We like good touch like a hug. You can say no to people. We are learning to say stop, walk and talk! You can trust people like your mum or dad. It is fun! We don't like spitting. Teachers are good. If some one said they hit someone, you get help!!!

Fractions in Room 6


We have been learning about fractions this week. We have learned what the bottom number and the top number means.

The bottom number means "the total number to make a whole".

The top number means, "the number of pieces I have".

The bar means "of" or "out of".

There are 24 marbles in a bag. 1/4 are blue, 2/4 are red 1/4 are green.

How many are blue?
How many are red?
How many are green?

Blue:
1/4 of 24=?
4x?=24
4x6=24
so 1/4 of 24 =6

So there are 6 blue and 6 green marbles.

I know 1/4=6
so 2/4 = 6+6=12

So there are 12 red marbles.

Bad Secrets, Good Suprises




In our class this week we have been learning about bad secrets and good surprises for our topic. We watched a movie called Brian and Bob. It was about bad secrets and good surprises. For example:

Bad secret: You might of broken someones toy and didn't say you did it.

Good surprise: You might have planed something for someones birthday party like made a scrumptious chocolate cake.

The whole class drew one of their bad secrets and one of their good surprises on a sheet of paper. We then talked about how we felt about both. We all had good feelings for the good surprise and we all had bad feelings with the bad secrets.

We will try to keep good surprises only.

Monday Maths!

On Monday we do a maths test. The super year 4 kids have 6and a half minutes
and the rocking year 3 kids get 7 minutes. We have to try our best & this is whats
IMPORTANT about it.

1.Try and get a #1 score.

2. GO UP rather then down.Example: 74 to 89 is good and 100 to 78 is.......er..bad!

3. Last of all look at how you improved!

Takaka sports

On Thursday the 12th August Takaka school came to Mapua to play us in rugby, soccer, hockey, netball, tug-of-war and miniball. Mapua bet Takaka in every sport except for tug-of-war and for the first time, in four years, Mapua won the sheild.!!
