Room 6,4 and 1 had a Smarties Day on Wednesday the 17th of November. Our topic for Smarties was force. Force is push and pull. We did lots of activities about push and pull. We went around in groups. My favourite activity was eathquakes in the sandpit. The steps to make an eathquake were...
Make a flat surface.
Put two boards beside each other.
Then put some sand on top.
Next build a town on it.
Choose an earthquak you want to make.

There where 7 activities throughout the day. Now we know what force is and how to use it. It was really,really fun! But we were very tired after that! Is that a good thing or a bad thing parents?

Today we have been preparing for our Remember Me Day. This is a special day to remember people you love and to celebrate them.

Marco and Georgina rang the newspapers and the radio to try and advertise this day.
We went on garageband to record an ad for the radio. (Fergus)
We decided what lights we needed and how we can get help to set it up. (Sophie)
We planned the signs for the night. (Brooke)
The music group listened to CDs to create a playlist for the night. (Sasha)
We made an invitation on Printshop to send to all the schools. (Jamie)
We asked for help by writing in the school newsletter and gathered some glass jars. (Ethan)

Kia Ora Koutou,

Well...another busy term has almost passed. I am so impressed with the effort your children have been putting in this term. They erally are very tired and will enjoy the 2 weeks break, I'm sure.

Just a heads up...
We will NOT be going to the library next Friday, so all the Mapua Library books need to be returned before the due date, which is stamped on the back inside cover of each book.

I am out of class on Tuesday next week and Anne Askin will be in for me. She has relieved for me bfore and knows the class.

We are testing this week, so please ensure your child is at school. Thanks.

Our last Smarties day for this term is on Thursday. Another successful programme to promote the amazing talents, skills and knowledge of the Middle Syndicate. I personally have loved creating a marble run with the Logic Smarties this term.

We have the opening of the Coastal Walkway on the last day of term. You are all welcome to come.

Making gifts in Room 6.

In room 6 we are learning about Technology. One of the challenges was to make a gift for someone spacial to you. We did lots of planning and thinking. We also had to tell Whaea Aroha why we were giving this gift to this person.

Then we had to do a Decision Making Matrix to help us make our decision for what we are making. We started making our gifts on Wednesday the 15 of September but some people had to start on Thursday the 16 of September because they had to wait for the clay to arrive so they ended up helping other people with there gift.

Soon we get to give our gifts to our spacial person. It will be a huge surprise when we reveal our gift to our special person.

Technology Challenge: Design and Make a Gift.

This term fantastic Room 6 have a topic about giving gifts.
First we needed to make a list or a bubble map about who we can give gifts to.
Then we choose who to make it for why and what type of gift it is. For example, a thank you gift.
Later we had to write eight things they would like and choose the best four and write them down on a Decision Making Matrix.
The DMM had criteria for each gift and we had to rate (marking) from 1 to 3.
The one with the highest mark is the one we got to make for our special person.
Then we needed to make a design of what we were making.
Soon we get to make our gift. yyiippiiee!!!

On Friday the 10th of September, the school is having a pajama day. We come to school in our p.jays and bring a donation for the Salvation Army. All the money raised will be given to the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army started in New Zealand in 1883. They help homeless people find a safe place to live, they can help in emergencies like earthquakes, they help people who are poor, they help with missing people, they provide food parcels for people who need it, they help you find hope...

Library Visit

Today we went to the Mapua Library for our first class visit this term. We will be going every alternate Friday, starting today, from 10.30am-11.30am.

Your child has been issued 2 books and needs to bring these back to school on Friday September 10th, when we will be revisiting the library. The date on the books allows 3 weeks, however we will be visiting fortnightly, so try to have them read in that time.

The school has paid for individual cards, so the books are under your child's name if you want to return them earlier.

If you have lost a book or accidentally damaged one, please let the librarians know, so they can work through that with you.

The Mapua Library is a great resource and we really enjoyed our time there. If you want to join us, you are more than welcome.

In rugby we are lerning to pass and to hold the ball properly. In basketball we are

How to make a Bird House. well First you need some string and 4 straws ,2 big peaces of paper, ,15 or 20 peaces of Newspaper and 1peace of plastik.Then you can start making it but It needs to be 60cm or 50cm high so its not as easy for cats or rats to get them. Then it should turn out like a toy Bird House. By James and Rebecca.

How to build a bird house. Well, first you need some string, four straws, two big pieces of paper, 15-20 pieces of newspaper and one piece of plastic. Now you can start making it.

Remember, it needs to be 50cm-60cm high so it's not easy for cats or rats to get them. It should then, turn out like a bird house.

We had a challenge to see how long each marble went. We had to make a bridge that's stable between 2 desks. The Amazing Inventors' bridge went 43 cm.The girls rock got 21cm.

On Wednesday we did a Technology Challenge.Rooms six,one and four got split up into three groups.group one did a catapult challenge the beans they fired went pretty long there was awesome designs.group two did some marble bridges some were very long and very cool.And group three made some bird houses they looked very comfy they were very imaginative.I thought the challenges were really awesome.

On Wednesday, we completed a technology challenge. The Middle Syndicate were split up into groups. Group one built a bird feeder, group two had to build a catapult to throw a bean the furtherest and group three had to build the longest bridge. The catapults fired the beans a long way. Technology Catapults

On Wednesday the 25 of August the Middle Syndicate had a Technology Challenge. We were split into groups; one group had to make the longest marble bridge, one group had to build a stand alone bird feeder and another group had to build a catapult that threw a bean the furtherest. We're telling you about the catapult.

We had 10 minutes to make a catapult that fires a bean. After all that we had a competition to see who's bean would go the furthest when you fired it.The longest bean went 7m and 49cm. Second place was 3m and 69cm. I felt happy for coming second.

Fairytale Word Wall

This term we are learning to write our own fairytale. We made a word wall to help us use interesting words for our stories. Whaea Aroha got us into groups of four and five to make different parts of a fairytale; Once upon a time, a goodie victim(Princess), a goodie hero (prince), a baddie,things to stop goddie getting what they want, and....happily ever after. Then we had to think of interesting adjectives and verbs to describe those characters and settings. We placed them on the wall and now we have our own fairytale dictionary to use.

Well, we've had a very busy start to the term and now we're half way through! Time does seem to fly when you're having fun.

Maths: Fraction focus. We are learning about fractions in context to real life situations. There is lots of problem solving using fraction strategies and knowledge. Try to encourage any discussions about fractions at home.

Writing: Fairytales. We have read and dissected well known fairytales in reading to help develop our knowledge and confidence in writing our very own fairytale.

Reading: We continue to work on using lots of different strategies for reading. The focus at the moment is "Skippy Frog" for most children. Skip it, skip it!
1: Skip the word (Skip it, skip it)
2: Read to the end of the sentence.
3. "Hop back" and read it, read it.

This is to encourage the children to use the sentence to put the word in context, to help look at the whole picture rather than just the word, which can limit comprehension. Try this at home.

Topic: We have finished our focus on "Keeping Ourselves Safe" I believe there have been some real life lessons learnt through this unit, where the children are armed with knowledge and tools to deal with unwanted touch. A task sheet was sent home earlier in the term to help you and your child discuss this.

Topic: Techonology. We will continue to have our Smarties programme on a Thursday afternoon with a Technology focus. This will support the learning we do throughout the week.

Sport and Health: Winter Sports: Basketball, Rugby, Netball. Soon we will be starting our atheltics programme to prepare for the Moutere Hills Athletics Day.

I was making a boat. I put the wood in the wood curving machine. It curved good. Then ten minutes later it was made. I went for a test. The engine bursted into life. I put the gears up like this... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10! I was at my 10th gear. I was taking a risk. I went up the gears again from 11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19... I know I was at the top gear. I was really excited.

Bad Secrets, Good Suprises

In our class this week we have been learning about bad secrets and good surprises for our topic. We watched a movie called Brian and Bob. It was about bad secrets and good surprises. For example:

Bad secret: You might of broken someones toy and didn't say you did it.

Good surprise: You might have planed something for someones birthday party like made a scrumptious chocolate cake.

The whole class drew one of their bad secrets and one of their good surprises on a sheet of paper. We then talked about how we felt about both. We all had good feelings for the good surprise and we all had bad feelings with the bad secrets.

We will try to keep good surprises only.

Monday Maths!

On Monday we do a maths test. The super year 4 kids have 6and a half minutes
and the rocking year 3 kids get 7 minutes. We have to try our best & this is whats
IMPORTANT about it.

1.Try and get a #1 score.

2. GO UP rather then down.Example: 74 to 89 is good and 100 to 78 is.......er..bad!

3. Last of all look at how you improved!

On Thursday the 12th August Takaka school came to Mapua to play us in rugby, soccer, hockey, netball, tug-of-war and miniball. Mapua bet Takaka in every sport except for tug-of-war and for the first time, in four years, Mapua won the sheild.!!

Celebrating Maori Language Week

To celebrate Maori Langauge Week, the Mapua Middle Syndicate invited one class from Mahana, Dovedale, Upper Moutere and Tasman Bay Christian schools,to come and hang out with us. We welcomed our visitors with a waiata (song), then we had lunch and a play together.

In our mixed school groups we went to cool activities to help us learn and celebrate te reo Maori (the language) and tikanga Maori (cultural).

Rakau: We learnt smooth moves with the rakau and then we got to create some of our own moves.
Waiata: We sang Haere Mai and Tutira Mai.
Koru Art: We looked at different kowhaiwhai patterns and then created our own with chalk on the ground.

Weaving: We created ika (fish) with coloured paper. We followed simple weaving techniques.

Bingo: We played "Whare Whare!" Bingo with Maori numbers.
Hei Tama Tu Tama: We played this Maori game to find the World Champion.
Maori Legends: We acted out the legend of "How the Piwakawaka got it's tail."

It was fabulous to meet new people. Whaea Aroha's challenge was to meet at least one person from a different school. Most of us achieved this. Kia Ora (thanks) everyone for coming to our school. Let's do it again.

Our topic this term is about Keeping Ourselves Safe. We talked about feelings. We talked about how we would feel in different situations. We talked about:
1: How would we feel if we were going on a big holiday tomorrow?
2: How would we feel if someone we didn't know came up to us on the street and said our name?
3: How would we feel if we got a certificate?
4: How would you feel if you had to jump off the highest diving board?

We tried to come up with lots of different words to describe our feelings. Now we have a whole lot of words to help us describe how we feel in different situations. We can use these words to explain how we feel in real life. Then we ordered these words on our Feelings Thermometer.

Art Exploration in Room 6

In Room 6 we have been learning about 3 different elements in art; Line, Space and Colour.

Line: We explored the different types of line we could create with different tools. We then focused on Ben Heine, a Belgian artist, and created a "Pencil versus Camera" art piece. Look closely at what our imaginations could see in the photo. Check how we connected the drawing to the photo.

Space: We learnt about positive and negative space. We directed the person in our photo, created the background and took the photo. We then downloaded the photo and edited it. The shadow is our positive space and the light is the negative space. Do you think you can work out how we made our image?

Colour: We looked at Tone. We had to create a colour version of a black and white photo using light, middle and dark tones.

Ruby Bay Image: We visited the beach and spent time sketching main parts of the view we could see. In class, we were able to choose the tool we used to create our masterpiece. We thought about Line, Space and Colour. We tried very hard to use different techniques to create our image.

We wanted to support the All Whites on Tuesday, so we had a White Out Day at school. Everyone dressed up in white. There was a big football match too. I watched the game from up high in a tree. Whaea A did a header. Wow! Whaea A you are really good at soccer. The teachers won the game. Room 6 won the White Out Award for wearing the most white. It was a great day. I had a lot of fun and the All Whites drew with Slovakia. Cool!

It was a big day. The staff and Year 7 versus Year 8. We had photographers high in the trees (otherwise known as Ethan and Marco). The supporters were screaming on the sideline. The game was on.
The ball was getting kicked all over the place. Nikau had control, passed the ball to Sam who took a shot, but Whaea A saved the goal and booted it away. Storm came back with a deadly shot and scored. 1-0 to Year 8.

Mrs Bibby-Smith put in a mean header, Mrs Stephens and Mrs Barnes had powereful boots and Whaea A juggled the ball skillfully. The staff quickly returned with a Big Mac special, Mr.Clearwater kicked it from the corner and Mr.Mac headed it in! 1-1

The second half was almost over when Mr.Mac booted it from halfway and it sky rocketed over everyone and landed in the goal. 2-1 to the Staff and Year 7.

The final whistle blew. The game was over. The champs; the Staff and Year 7. Well done everyone!

Aren't we lucky we get to have a programme called Smarties. We get to use our different "smarts" to create art. The smarts are word, math, music, visual, body, people,and nature smart.

I am doing puzzle art because I am maths smart. We are making koru designs from broken up tiles. It is a mosaic.

I am music smart. We listen to music and we draw what we think the music is about, how it makes us feel. Jamie

Maths

For maths this week we have been measuring lots of different things like the art bench and our decks and lots of other things. We have been throwing paper planes. Our buddies and us figured out a way to measure how far our paper planes went. I used my feet to measure, my buddy guessed how long meters were and used steps. The day after that we realised that what we measured with was not accurate. Then we measured with rulers and our results were different because you could get the exact distance from the rulers.

you need to mark from the first centimeter line on the ruler. Rebecca

We have been learning about measuring. First we made a speedy paper-plane. Next we threw our smart planes and marked where it landed. Then we chose a way of measuring accurately without a ruler. Some people used dictionaries, feet, hands, bodies, cars,...
We learned there is only one way of measuring accurately which is using a ruler. We can measure in mm, cm and m.

I loved the way we measured in a fun way and learnt lots too. Venka

Tim's dad got an award...

Guess what happend! Tim's dad had a special award from the Queen.

My dad got a Serving Member of St.John Award. He is an ambulance officer, he teaches others about First Aid and he works on the resucue helicopter.

My dad gets to bring the work car home sometimes. Once we got to look in the ambulance.

I am proud of my dad because he takes people to hospital.

George`s new solution for Measuing

George came up with a solution for measuring. You know how measuring with feet, books,
sticks is not an accurate way of measuring. Now that problem is solved! With this new
strategy you can measure anything!

Intructions:
1: Measure your foot using a ruler.
2: Measure the object with your foot.
3: Multiply the number of feet by length of your foot.
4: Remember to write cm in your answer.

Example:
My foot is 20cm long. Gf=20cm
Room 6 is 36 George feet wide.

How wide is Room 6?

Gf=20cm
so 36Gf = 36 x 20

30 + 30 = 60
6+6 = 12
60+10+2 = 72

so the answer is 720cm

so 36f=720cm

So Room 6 is 720cm wide or 7.20m wide.

Kath Bee

This week started with a splash! Kath Bee came to Mapua School. She sang "Dragons under my bed" and played along with her guitar. Also she made a SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH sign that if we were loud she would show it and we would be quiet. She gave balloon dogs to people who were dancing really amazing and stood out. Then she got some people to say "hello" in diffren't launguges like... shalom, ola, bula, tena koe, konnichi wa. At the end she gave one of her CD's, drum roll please bang, bang, bang, crash... to Callum for answering a question correctly. You could get one of her CD's and t-shirts.

The adults race was funny because Nigel, one of the adults, gave Juliana, a mum, a piggyback ride around the adult race. But then Nigel dropped her. Mr Clearwater was trying to beat them. It was just so funny and my step dad, Dave, bet all of them. He came first!

Hello world! Tim here, I get to do the blog this week with a little bit of help from Lorraine. I'm teaching her what to do because she's never done this before!

We had cross country on Monday. The weather was kind of rainy and cloudy. All the year 3 boys ran together. Mt Taylor called us on the loudspeaker and we went to the start line. Mrs Pilcher warmed us up. Mr T said "on your marks, get set, GO" and we ran off. We had to run round the track twice. I got puffed out and I sprinted to the end. My Mum and my class were cheering for me. My sister Anja and my baby brother Max came to watch me race. At the end I felt happy.

Room 6 is the best class in Mapua School because the kids are happy and we always work hard. I got the "YOU ROCK" award on Tuesday for my art.

We have got a new playground. It is fun to play on. It moved over to beside room 9. It used to be beside room 7. My favourite thing is the climbing chain.

As part of our Art topic we made some artwork inspired by Ben Heine. Our challenge was to use our imagination to create a line drawing of something that we see in the photo, that isn't there. They came out AMAZING!!!! Come and see them next time you are passing!

My new baby sister

I love my little baby sister, she is so cute. When she sleeps she makes funny noises. My baby sister was born last week on Thursday 27 May. I want her to be called Scarlett, but Mum and Dave will pick her name.

Scale Map of Royal Pigland

Our challenge was to make a scale map of all the settings from "The Three Little Pigs".

Step 1: List all the places you want on the map.
Step 2: Create a scale. We decided 1cm=100m We used meters because kilometers are too far for Pigs to walk and the wolf wouldn't bother if they lived too far away.
Step 3: Use our ruler to measure the pathways between places.
Step 4: Add the places in.
Step 5: Share out maps.

This is actually maths because there is measuring in it. Georgina

We are using paper planes to help us learn about measurement. The challenge was to throw a paper plane and then measure the distance it flew, but...we weren't allowed to use a ruler! So we measured in dictionaries, people, feet, sticks, cars,...

I have learned...
Dictionaries are not a good way to measure because they are all different sizes.
People are not a good way to measure because people are not the same size.
Feet are a good guessing way of measuring.

Reuben Wiki

Reuben Wiki came to Room Six. He is so cool! He played more than a hundred rugby league games. Also he was in lots and lots of countries like Australia, PNG, Samoa, England, Tonga, Germany, Italy, Vietnam/Laos, Fiji, New Zealand, and North America/ Los Angels. So that is pretty cool. He signed autographs and danced Jump Jam with us too.

He played tackle bull-rush with kids at lunch time. Storm tackled Reuben Wiki and got Reuben's singlet to keep. He ran over Jake too! The boys were covered from head to toe in mud!

We were a very lucky school to have Reuben Wiki visit us.

Easter egg hunt.

3 weeks ago we had a Easter egg hunt. When I hung my bag up I saw people lining up in their house colours to get their face painted. After I did my jobs, I went to get my face painted. Jamie's brother Samuel painted me and my brothers face. We also got rabbit ears. When the bell rang everyone ran into there class. When Whaea Aroha walked into our class she said, "We have a whole bunch of rabbits in our class today!" Then we carried on with our Maths. As soon as the bell rang we ran to our house for the rules. Then we ran around looking for the clues. When we finished looking for the clues the house leaders picked 5 people to build the Easter egg together. After they buit the Easter egg we took a photo of RED HOUSE! And we all got 1 Easter egg and went back to our class.

In term one we had a swim demonstration. Whaea Aroha said, "It was excellent swimming." We swam Freestyle and backstroke. Then the teacher thought it was to great so we did it again.

Triathalon

In Term 1 Mapua School had an amazing triathlon. Wooosh! We zoomed of into the distance. We speed around the cones 2 times. Then we hopped on our bikes and zoomed around the track. The year 4 boys raced to the pool filled with icy cold water. They swam like sharks trying to catch it's dinner. Then they leaped out of the pool and sprinted to the finish line. Ethan came first, Travies came second and Reece came third. In the year 4 girls race Sierra came first, Sasha came second and Venka came third.

It was great practice for the Weet-Bix Tryathlon.

The Big Day Out

In term one, the Middle Syndicate zoomed around Mapua Village completing all sorts of different activities for the Big Day Out.

First we we went to the Oreienteering activity. We followed the clues to get to the special surprise at the end which was an ice-cream at Hamish's.

Then we fished off the Mapua wharf but we only caught seaweed.

Next we visited the Aquarium. Some people touched the baby shark and some people touched the starfish that moved.

After that we rocketed to Survival Skills and made a hut out of a rope and a big piece of plastic. Toasting mashmallows, making people pyramids, playing in the leaves and boat building were part of the fun too.

Then we dashed to the Blind Fold Challenge.We had to work with a buddy. One was blind folded and one guided them around the playground.

I felt relieved that I had completed all the activities and looked at all the stickers on my Big Day Out Licence. I felt proud. (Georgina)

I liked the Aquarium because of all the colourful fish. (Travis)

Maths in Room 6

Maths is fun in Room 6 because we made Lolly Making Machines. The challenge was to carry out a Statistical Investigation.

Step 1: Ask a question

Step 2: Record the information/data on a Tally Chart.

Step 3: Graph it.

Step 4: Answer the question.

We had a problem. We had 4 new lolly ideas but we only had enough money to make one lolly making machine. So we needed to find out which lolly was the most popular.

We found out the Alien lolly was the most popular for our group.(Georgina)

We found out the Spider lolly was the most popular for our group.(Travis)

So then we could make our lolly making machines!

Lights. Camera. Action! We watched an awesome stage show with puppets and people. When the actors ran into the theater, everyone cheered. The actors sang a song for each season. We joined in with the singing too. Some of us had never been to the theater. It was really cool.

Managing Impulsivity
Sensible people think before they act.
Do you think before you act? If you want to make a decision, it is a good idea to think about it, look at the good things (Yellow Hat) and the bad things (Black Hat).

Like when you are angry, it is easy to call someone a name but afterwards you know it was the wrong thing to do. Managing impulsivity means walking away and talking to an adult. Let them help sort it out.

Remember, think before you act.

World of Maths

Yay! Room 6 cheered as we walked along the footpath to the church. Finally we arrived at the Maths Roadshow. Everybody rushed in. A guy called nick greeted us as we rushed of in our groups. In my group we tried to do all the activites. Most of the games were fun some were kind of hard. All the games were all about maths. We love maths!
